The Apache were put into boarding schools by U.S. cavalry captain Richard Henry Pratt, which was also backed by the government. This schools main purpose was to separate the children from the parents to “kill the Indian in him, and save a man” according to Pratt himself. In this boarding school the male kids and the male family members were forced to cut their hair in order to get rations, so if they didn’t cut their hair, they might starve. The kids were also forced not to speak their language and disease was very common in the schools.
